Coreper had an exchange of views on the scope and composition of the joint high level meetings on security and data protection following the exchange of letters between United States Attorney-General Eric Holder and Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding and Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström on this issue.

The process will start on Monday, July 8, with a meeting in Washington. It will deal with data protection and privacy rights of EU citizens falling within the competence of the EU, addressing the scope and composition of future meetings.

It was decided that the Commission and the Presidency will co-chair the EU delegation in this meeting. The European External Action Service and member states will participate in the meeting.
