The Migration Strategists of EU Member States Held a Session in Vilnius

Wednesday was the closing day for the two days long Informal Strategic Committee on Immigration, Frontier and Asylum of the Council of the EU (SCIFA) meeting, in which some of strategic migration and asylum issues were discussed before the upcoming Informal Meeting of Ministers for Justice and Home Affairs in Vilnius on July 18-19.

The Committee meeting was attended by high level officials and experts from 28 EU Member States as well as Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein. The respective representatives from the European Commission, the EU Member States' External Borders Agency, the European Asylum Support Office, General Secretariat of the EU Council and Legal Service of the EU Council also participated. The meeting was organized by the Ministry of the Interior, and it was chaired by the Deputy Director of International Cooperation Department Kęstutis Bučinskas.

On the first day of the Committee meeting the 4th Annual European Commission Report on Immigration and Asylum was presented. The presented information was positively evaluated by the delegations. The provisions of the EU Action Plan on Migratory Pressures in the area of migration management, related to cooperation with third countries of origin and transit, were also discussed.

On the second day of the meeting, the Proposal for a Draft Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the conditions of entry and residence of third-country nationals for the purposes of research, studies, pupil exchange, remunerated and unremunerated training, voluntary service and au pairing, was discussed. During the meeting the need for provisions to be improved was emphasized and the European Commission as well presented a feasibility study on the legal and practical implications while establishing a joint mechanism for processing of asylum applications on the territory of the EU, the views on further actions were exchanged.

The next Strategic Committee on Immigration, Frontier and Asylum of the Council of the EU will be held in Brussels at the end of September.
