The EU-US Ministerial Meeting will be held in Washington

The European Union (EU) and the United States of America (US) ministerial meeting on justice and home affairs will take place on 18 November in Washington. At this meeting the EU will be represented on behalf of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council by Minister of Justice of Lithuania Juozas Bernatonis and Vice-Minister of the Interior of Lithuania Elvinas Jankevičius, the European Commission (EC) Vice-President, Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship Commissioner Viviane Reding and the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström.

The EU and US delegations are going to exchanged information on the recent achievements in the area of justice and home affairs.

“With our US partners we have to discuss a lot issues in the area of justice which are topical for both sides. The relevant aspects of multilateral judicial cooperation in criminal matters and civil law area will be discussed. Moreover, at the meeting it is intended to review the current situation in the field of data protection, prospects of Eurojust and Europol activities, the possibilities of establishment of a European Public Prosecutor's Office proposed by the European Commission”- emphasizes Minister of Justice J. Bernatonis.

“In the context of mobility, migration and border management, special attention will be given to the situation in Syria and the related issue of migration flows”, - states Vice-Minister of the Interior E. Jankevičius. “At the meeting it is also expected to discuss the EU-US cooperation in the areas of fight against terrorism, fight against cybercrime and cyber security”.

After this event, the meeting of Minister of Justice J. Bernatonis with the US Lithuanian community and the representatives of the Department of Justice is planned.

Regular EU-US Justice and Home Affairs Ministerial Meetings are held twice a year, alternately organized in the US or in the territory of the Member State holding presidency of the Council of the EU. That will be the second meeting this year, the first one was held in Dublin on 13-14 June during the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU.
