On July 18-19th a meeting and a seminar of the Committee of the Regions' Commission for Natural Resources (NAT) took place in Kaunas, Lithuania. The main discussion during the seminar focused on the sustainable rural development and use of natural resources, financial support measures and new financial perspective 2014–2020.

The participants were adressed by Mindaugas Kuklierius, viceminister of Agriculture, René Souchon, chair of the NAT Commission of the CoR and Andrius Kupčinskas, Mayor of Kaunas.

„Rural development today inevitably is related to the global social challenges such as demographic problems, unfavorable age structure, employment. Most of these challenges raise the other issues. For example, the growing demand for food inevitably leads to the increasing demand for agriculture products”, – pointed out Vice Minister.

Most speakers stressed that the regional development will be sustainable only if the efforts will be put on economic unit (farm), local and regional level, and the peculiarity of each area will be taken into account.

"The process of regional development should be integral. This means that the long-term agricultural and rural sustainability will be achieved more quickly only if the Member States and regions will use effectively the new financial opportunities”, – noted M. Kuklierius.

The partnership and relations between the local economic players, representatives of local community, business and government institutions are very important while seeking for sustainable regional development and competitiveness of rural areas.

Commission for Natural Resources (NAT) is one of 5 topical commissions of the Committee of the Regions, examining issues related to use of natural resources, agriculture, fishery and powers and responsibilities of local and regional authorities in this field.
