On July 26, 2013, Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius welcomed the participants of the international human rights conference European Policy Guidelines for the Protection of LGBT Rights, and underscored the importance of dialogue and equality in society. Words of welcome were passed on by the advisor of the Minister Neringa Vaisbrodė.

“As a long-year diplomat I know that dialogue is a long process, but it also leads to best results. We can put laws and institutions in place, but we make them work only by making people believe that it is what is best for them and the society,” said the Minister.

During its Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), Lithuania will give much attention to equal opportunities between EU citizens and gender equality. One of the most important tasks will be promoting discussions and progress between the 28 EU Member States on a directive that would express an equal approach towards persons regardless of their religion or beliefs, disability, age or sexual orientation.

The international human rights conference is one of the social partner events of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU. 2013 is the year of European citizens, thus EU citizens are actively encouraged to participate in discussions about European issues. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited representatives of non-governmental organizations, business and culture to organise meetings where issues related to the EU agenda would be discussed, and which would strengthen cooperation with EU partners. Over 80 such events will be held over these six months.
