On 18 October in Vilnius, Ministry of Justice together with the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania is organizing a seminar “Totalitarian regimes’ heritage in hate crimes”. The main goal of the seminar is to discuss the relationship between hate crimes and the crimes committed by totalitarian regimes. It is one of the events of the Lithuanian Presidency of the European Union (EU) Council organized by the Ministry of Justice.

The main topic of this seminar is the legal evaluation of totalitarian crimes; however, other historical, sociological and political aspects will be also dealt with. Moreover, attention will be drawn to public tolerance, denial or gross trivialization of totalitarian crimes as well.

„As the European Union is enlarging and its influence on daily lives of people is increasing, protection of human rights has become one of the priorities of the European Union. The adopted Charter of Fundamental Rights provides for that discrimination is prohibited. Member States should make every effort to fight against crimes induced by racism, xenophobia or religious intolerance“– emphasizes Justice Minister Juozas Bernatonis.

The seminar will aim to draw attention of EU Member States and institutions to the historical memory of totalitarianism. The participants of the event will discuss about the consequences of totalitarian regimes in today‘s world, speak about public tolerance, denial, gross trivialization of hate crimes, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide, about the rights of victims of these crimes.

Representatives from EU Member States and Eastern Partnership countries, totalitarianism centres and universities will participate in the seminar.
