On the occasion of the visit of the European Commission to Lithuania and the opening of the Presidency of the Council of the EU, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius gave a welcoming speech during the working lunch at the Presidential Palace.

“It has been nine years since Lithuania became a member of the European Union. During those years Lithuania has proved to be an honest and reliable member of the European family. Now Lithuania is merited to hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union”, said the Prime Minister.

The Head of the Government stated that our country maintains a strong devotion to the values and goals of the EU and is strongly committed to share its best practice with the member states and global partners. “We are ready to contribute to the global vision of the European Union by bringing in our motivation, our drive, and our experience in key areas of European significance”.

According to the Prime Minister, as one of the most successful countries to overcome the economic and financial crisis and return to sustainable recovery and growth, Lithuania understands the importance of the political will to make the needed rapid adjustments on time. “Lithuania is capable of sharing its best practice not only with the recent members, but also with the founders of the EU”, said the Prime Minister.

“In accordance to our experience, we have set the priority areas - economic growth, job creation and better competitiveness. The EU must demonstrate to its people and the world that it pursues credible financial and economic policies, is committed to growth through joint initiatives that increase competitiveness, and aims at security for its citizens and openness with its partners. In order to ensure all of this, closer cooperation between member states is needed more than ever,” stated the Prime Minister and added that the Presidency will go through in accordance to the principles of the European Union and help to enhance the unique values we all share.
