President Dalia Grybauskaitė opened a special event dedicated to Lithuania's Presidency of the EU Council and congratulated Lithuanian people and all Europeans on launching the Presidency.

The opening ceremony of Lithuania's EU Presidency which was held in a symbolic place - the Grand Courtyard of Vilnius University - was attended by the EC President José Manuel Barroso and members of the Commission, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, journalists from the EU member states, as well as outstanding representatives of Lithuanian culture and art, political figures and diplomats.

Lithuania taking the helm of the European Union for the first time ever, introduced itself to Europe with musical composition "Sąšauka" ("Linkup") by Kipras Mašanauskas, performed by musicians from Lithuania and other European countries. A piece consisting of 28 musical fragments was inspired by Lithuanian multivoiced songs sutartinės.

"Lithuanian sutartinės perfectly illustrate what the Presidency of the Council is about. Ability to reach concord, make different voices come together and deliver a meaningful result is the headline target of the Lithuanian Presidency. We will have to mobilize the whole Europe and find agreement," the President said.

She noted that during its presidency Lithuania would work to achieve close interstate and inter-institutional cooperation. Financial stability, economic growth and job creation, especially for young people, more open and more secure Europe - these are our common objectives.

"May this unisonous and loud sound of drums serve as a reminder to keep the tempo and rapidly adopt decisions that all Europeans need. May the hearts of all people in Europe beat in unison," the President said.

According to the President, it is symbolic that Lithuania takes over the Presidency from Ireland - it was during the Irish Presidency in 2004 that Lithuania became a member of the Union. Today the EU flag is entrusted to Lithuanian people, therefore we must pool efforts and work full-heartedly - using our knowledge and capabilities - towards Europe's future which, as a Lithuanian sutartinė, would be harmonious and united.

The President wished all to work as a team, aiming at concrete outcomes, and to be proud of being Europeans and working for Europe.

Musical compositions were performed by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Modestas Pitrėnas, Kaunas State Choir, and Mixed Children Choir of National Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis School of Art.
