On 18 October, an international conference dedicated to human trafficking on the Internet will take place at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania. The event commemorating the 7th EU Anti-Trafficking Day is being organised by the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania in cooperation with the Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs and the European Commission.

The conference entitled Exploring the Links between the Internet and Trafficking in Human Beings: Cyberspace for Prevention, not Recruitment will cover how criminals are using the Internet for human trafficking and the recruitment of victims. The conference’s participants will also share knowledge and ideas for making the Internet an effective instrument for human trafficking prevention, using it for analytical research, prosecution, provision of e-services for the victims of human trafficking, education of society, and other preventive activities. The agenda also includes a discussion on how to decrease the need to use the services of exploited people.

On the eve of the conference, 17 October, another similar event will take place at the Seimas – ADSTRINGO: Addressing trafficking in human beings for labour exploitation through improved partnerships, enhanced diagnostics, and intensified organisational approaches. This forum will be dedicated to discussing the issues of the national and regional partnership to strengthen the prevention of human trafficking for forced labour.

The event will focus on the analysis of the mechanisms allowing the exploitation of migrants. This project implements the EU Baltic Sea region strategy action plan’s priority Taking preventive measures against human trafficking, of which Lithuania is responsible for implementation. The project is funded by the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, the EC’s Prevention of and Fight against Crime programme, the Council of the Baltic States Task Force Against Human Trafficking, and the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control affiliated under the United Nations.
