President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with members of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC) to discuss topical EU issues, Lithuania's EU Presidency priorities and Eastern Partnership.

COSAC brings together the EU affairs committees of national Parliaments, as well as Members of the European Parliament. Plenary meetings are held twice a year in the EU presiding member state. Among those attending the Vilnius meeting are the Foreign Minister of France and founder of COSAC, Laurent Fabius, former Presidents of the European Parliament Pat Cox and Hans-Gert Pöttering. Today the President met with them at the Presidential Palace.

According to Dalia Grybauskaitė, COSAC symbolizes effective cooperation in building a stronger European Union, emphasizing the importance of closer dialogue with EU citizens.

Lithuania as the EU presiding country seeks to bring together all efforts aimed at finding the best solutions for the people of Europe in advancing the economy, reducing unemployment and ensuring energy security. The President underscored that it was necessary to reach an agreement on the Multiannual Financial Framework and to have it approved in the European Parliament. Funding is critical for new jobs and economic growth, the President said.

Lithuania is also committed to speeding up the creation of the EU Single Market. The common energy market should be completed by 2014, while the digital single market should be in place by 2015. This will enable to save funds and promote the EU's competitiveness.

The President stressed that the EU's relations with Eastern neighbors were essential for the security of European people. Therefore, there were strong expectations that the Vilnius Summit was going to open a new chapter in the relationship with Eastern Partnership countries. Dalia Grybauskaitė said that the streamlined efforts of all EU member states were needed for this purpose.
