Today, 16 October, a two-day joint meeting of the European Union (EU) Urban Development Group and the Network of the National Territorial Cohesion Contact Points ended in Vilnius. The meeting involved representatives of the EU Member States as well as candidate countries, United Nations (UN) HABITAT Programme, and international organisations in the field of urban development and territorial planning.

Members of the meeting discussed the territorial impact of migration on urban development, territorial cohesion and special development, and the necessity to ensure under the circumstances the efficient functioning of inner urban structures, urban centres and their networks. The meeting also discussed the importance of developing an EU urban agenda, as well as cooperation with the UN HABITAT programme as regards drafting the estimated “New Urban Agenda for the 21st century”.

The meeting paid considerable attention to the action plan for the implementation of the EU territorial agenda. The meeting stressed the necessity to renew measures given most importance to cut the negative impact of territorial migration of urban development, territorial cohesion and special development.

“The meeting is important both to us and any other EU Member State, while topics suggested by Lithuania were considered as most relevant,” according to Marius Narmontas, chairman of the meeting and Director of the Territorial Planning, Urban Development and Architecture at the Ministry of the Environment. According to Mr Narmontas, Lithuania started cooperation with other EU Member States in this field long before it joined the EU, while its fully-fledged involvement started with national membership in 2004.

These meetings are run by each Presidency of the Council of the EU. The meetings take place twice per year, and shape the common notions of the EU Member States. The meetings are used to draft proposals for meetings of managing directors.
