This Wednesday an event, organized by Permanent Representations of Lithuania and Croatia to the EU, opened the EU Council’s Justus Lipsius building decoration to mark the beginning of Lithuania’s Presidency of the EU Council and Croatia’s entry to the EU family as well. The project „European Gardens“ is one of the most important creative projects in the EU institutions, performed by every presiding member state.

“The Presidency provides us with a wonderful opportunity to highlight the richness of Lithuanian culture. You can see here only a small fraction of our talented artists. Through their innovative and inspiring ideas, these artists represent Lithuania’s dynamic creative environment that is part of the tightly knitted creative network of Europe,” Minister of Culture of Lithuania Šarūnas Birutis said in the opening ceremony.

A group of Lithuanian artists cooperating with “Ekspobalta” Ltd. and led by idea‘s author Saulius Valius, created the decoration project “Gardens of Europe” reflecting traditional Lithuanian crafts, modern art and contemporary design. The instalation from light-weight aluminium tubes in the Atrium of the building is a conceptual and visual axis of the decoration, showing traditional Lithuanian straw gardens in a modern way. The straw gardens simbolize the world tree and the order of the universe. The installation is comprised of 28 individual “Gardens of Europe”, dedicated to each EU member state –  is designed to create the sense of harmony and stability.

The dominant motif of gardens is repeated in the other original pieces of furniture and illuminators set out in other areas of Justus Lipsius. The art pieces of modernist graphic artist Rimtautas Vincentas Gibavičius and sculptor Teodoras Kazimieras Valaitis are set up in the public zones on the ground and the fifth floor. The lounge and other premises of the Presidency rooms are decorated with the works of optical impresionism by Kazimieras Žoromskis and contemporary pieces of furniture as well as the design objects by Nauris Kalinauskas and Paulius Vitkauskas. The ornaments of Justus Lipsius reflect essential features of Lithuanian culture and its connection with the European culture.

"The Gardens of Europe" will be exhibited until December 31st.
