Friday, September 6 - President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Elmer Brok, Chairman of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs, to discuss key EU foreign policy issues. Special focus was placed on the ongoing preparations for the Vilnius Summit which will be held this coming November.

"This is a crucial time for relations between the European Union and its Eastern partners. With only two months to go before the Vilnius Summit, it is very important to have the homework done. It needs to be done by both the EU and partner countries. And the European Parliament plays a significant role in this process," the President said.

Dalia Grybauskaitė underlined that the EU's unified position at this moment in time is more important than ever. The European Union must send a clear message that it views cooperation with Eastern Partnership countries as necessary and significant.

According to the President, it is very important to lay down the future guidelines for the Eastern Partnership programme at the Vilnius Summit to keep it attractive. Association agreements with Eastern partners would be the first step towards a qualitatively new relationship with these countries.
