World COPD Day 2013: What role for diseases and patients in shaping Horizon 2020 – A COPD case study of patient involvement
- Location:
-
International Press Centre «Residence Palace», 155 Rue de la Loi
Brussels
Event date:
28.11.2013ECC (The European COPD Coalition) and EFA (the European Federation of Allergy, COPD and Airways Diseases Patients Associations) organize an event on 20th November to mark World COPD Day.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a long-term lung and airways disease that is not curable but is manageable if caught before its severe form. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.COPD causes wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and other symptoms. It also creates damages in the tiny air sacs at the tips of the airways. This makes it hard to move air in and out of the lungs.
Further research into the disease mechanisms and development, treatments, social determinants of health and in rehabilitation programmes are essential to prevent and treat the disease, to better care for patients suffering from COPD.
However, the draft future EU Research programme, Horizon 2020 may prove to be difficult to navigate when trying to tackle a single disease.
EFA’s publication on Minimum Standards of Care for COPD Patients in Europe will present findings of a questionnaire completed by patient associations across Europe, which answered based upon present care for patients in their countries. Furthermore, EFA’s Booklet on Air Travel with Oxygen in Europe highlights a clear case of ongoing discrimination against COPD patients requiring oxygen air therapy. Together these demonstrate tangible reference points for policymakers, from the patients themselves, to help identify areas for research, improvement in COPD awareness and care.
This event will allow participants to better understand how Horizon 2020 will benefit their research plans and how to seek funds from EU research bodies to support their work, in COPD or other diseases.
